Course Overview

Course Overview

More and more people are writing memoirs, whether for publication or simply to create a personal record of their own lives.

On this course we will explore different ways of approaching memoir-writing. Maybe you would like to share your thoughts and experiences with future generations. Maybe there’s an extraordinary episode in your life that deserves to be documented – or perhaps you’re fascinated by the day-to-day details of our lives in a fast-changing world.

Each week of the course will have a different theme, for example ‘Writing about significant places’, and we will consider how to select material (what to leave in and what to leave out!) and ways of arranging and presenting your memories. During the weekly classes we will discuss many examples from published memoirs, looking at the choices made by the writers in relation to style, content, tone and structure. All course materials will be provided.

You will have the chance to write and develop several short pieces based on your own memories, with advice and constructive written feedback from the tutor in a relaxed and mutually supportive environment.
